Overview

The Whale squad

The Whale Squad is a Decision Support Team within Marketing & Supply (M&S) and Gas & Power Solutions (G&P). Our role is to develop and maintain machine learning models that predict future gas consumption, storage levels, and other key indicators. Our main stakeholders are the members of the UK gas trading desk.

Currently, the squad is composed of four data scientists and data engineers, supported by a team facilitator. We supply data to a suite of Power BI reports and Streamlit applications, which are utilized by the trading desk to refine trading strategies. The data we use is sourced from a variety of providers, and our work is reliant on data and services from teams like Atlas and EurekaML.

We are focused on two main products:

#1 Fundamental Stack Model

This model generates predictions for future gas demand, pipeline flow volumes, and seasonal storage, among other metrics. We use fundamental data such as weather conditions, temperature, and historical consumption in our machine learning models to produce forecast data. These forecasts are broken down by different countries and regions to provide tailored insights.

#2 Spreadometer

The Spreadometer is a tool that visualizes market and contract price spreads through various tables and graphics. It is available as a Streamlit application, offering a user-friendly interface for analysis.
